Sistech – Project Buddy: Supporting Refugee Women Through Group Tech Projects

Thematic Area:

by Sistech

Organization Description:
Sistech is an European non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to the economic empowerment of refugee women through access to sustainable employment in tech and digital sectors. We design practical pathways that bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, enabling refugee women to gain the skills, confidence, and networks needed to build independent careers. Since 2018, we have supported over 900 refugee women across Greece, France, and Italy. In Greece, we have trained 258 women, providing free weekly mentoring sessions, certified training, and networking activities. Our programmes are co-designed with refugee women to address real barriers: childcare constraints, language gaps, lack of professional networks, and limited access to equipment. Participants receive laptops, wifi support, certified digital skills training aligned with local job market demands, and weekly one-on-one mentorship. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our programmes, supporting refugee women as mentors, trainers, and language tandem partners throughout their journey. The impact is tangible across multiple dimensions. Women achieve sustainable employment (internships, jobs, freelance work, or entrepreneurial projects) that provides economic and social independence. They complete certified training and language proficiency courses, developing not just technical credentials but the practical skills and confidence to navigate job markets independently, advocate for their worth, and make informed career decisions. Beyond employment outcomes, women rebuild their professional identity and develop leadership capabilities. They move from dependence to agency, from being told what opportunities might be available to actively shaping their own career trajectories.

Activity details

Volunteering Activity Description:

Volunteers support small groups of 4-5 refugee women enrolled in Sistech’s Pathway programme, a free online course guiding refugee women toward careers in tech and digital fields. Over 8 weeks, volunteers meet with their group for approximately 7-8 online sessions (45 minutes each) to mentor Fellows as they research and prepare a team presentation on a tech company or relevant soft skills topic. Volunteers guide participants in structuring their project, organizing tasks, dividing responsibilities, and presenting findings clearly. This activity builds teamwork, research, and presentation skills while providing personalized support in a small-group setting. Timing and day are flexible.
