THI Brings Advanced Diagnostic Equipment to Remote Greece

The Hellenic Initiative announces the completion of a major medical equipment upgrade supporting Axion Hellas missions across remote and underserved regions of Greece. THI funded the acquisition of six new state-of-the-art ophthalmological diagnostic machines, significantly enhancing the organization’s ability to deliver high-quality medical care to isolated island and mainland communities.

This donation strengthens Axion Hellas’ medical infrastructure at a time when access to specialized healthcare remains severely limited in many remote parts of the country. Numerous rural clinics and health centers lack even basic diagnostic tools, forcing residents to travel long distances to access essential medical examinations and preventive care.

Founded in 2016, Axion Hellas has become one of Greece’s leading nonprofit organizations supporting remote communities through healthcare, education, culture, environmental action, and infrastructure initiatives. Through a multidisciplinary volunteer network of more than 250 professionals – including doctors, educators, psychologists, artists, athletes, and specialists from multiple sectors – the organization has conducted twenty-one major missions across more than 60 remote destinations throughout Greece. Over the past years, Axion Hellas has provided free medical care and preventive screening to more than 18,000 residents, performing over 48,000 diagnostic examinations across more than 20 medical specialties.

During its last mission alone, Axion Hellas mobilized nearly 162 participants, including approximately 70 doctors. The mission delivered 5,759 medical examinations to 1,387 residents, implemented 30 educational and cultural programs, and covered 515 nautical miles.
The newly acquired ophthalmological equipment, with the support of The Hellenic Initiative, has already transformed the organization’s diagnostic capacity, enabling medical teams to examine more residents with greater speed and precision, identify more medical findings, and provide earlier and more effective interventions.

Aliki Drakouli, President of Axion Hellas, stated: “At Axion Hellas, our mission has always been rooted in equality of access – ensuring that residents of Greece’s most remote communities receive the same level of care and opportunity as anyone else. This important support from THI strengthens our medical missions and allows our volunteer teams to deliver even more impactful healthcare services where they are needed most.”

George P. Stamas, THI Board President, noted: ”Axion Hellas represents the very best of Greece: volunteerism, solidarity, professionalism, and action. Their work delivers measurable and immediate impact on communities that are too often overlooked.”

Andrew N. Liveris, THI Board Chairman, added“Axion Hellas has built an extraordinary platform that brings healthcare, education, and opportunity directly to underserved communities. THI’s investment is about more than equipment – it is about strengthening resilience, improving lives, and ensuring that no community in Greece is left behind.”
