The Hellenic Initiative announces a new grant of $ 25,000 to Symplefsi, to aid in its efforts of supporting the most remote islands of Greece. Thanks to THI, Symplefsi has installed a new, fully air-conditioned classroom at the Agathonisi Public School to enhance the learning environment. The project brings together the Greek Diaspora with the most remote Greek islands, demonstrating the solidarity of Greek communities across the globe.
Symplefsi was created in 2014 to improve the lives of Greeks who live in the outermost islands of the country. Historically, these islands have had to endure severe deprivations of resources and their needs have often been overlooked due to their geographical distance. Organising actions throughout the year, Symplefsi brings together volunteers to visit many of these islands, providing free specialized medical services, creating a new infrastructure through donations, supporting local schools with educational materials and equipment, and holding cultural and recreational events for the islands inhabitations.
Symplefsi has sailed 2,500 nautical miles to visit 20 remote and isolated Greek Islands since 2014, covering the medical expenses of almost 4000 of the islands inhabitants and conducting nearly 6000 medical tests. Additionally, the organization has inaugurated infrastructure projects in every one of these islands, based on the residents most immediate necessities.
Located in an important geographical location, Agathonisi is an island of 100 inhabitants. In recent years, through the ongoing refugee crisis, the island has faced significant difficulties. While its population is small, its youngsters are entitled to the same quality of education as any Greek citizen. With the aid of THI, Symplefsi addressed a critical issue for the island, by creating a new wing for Agathonisi’s public school.
Michael Printzos, THI’s Program Director, stated: “ The Hellenic Initiative firmly supports the inspiring work of Symplefsi. Education is the pillar stone of any society, connecting people across the globe, allowing people of all ages to fulfill their dreams and motivating them to pursue their passion. For us in THI, this collaboration also has a very symbolic meaning, since it gives us the opportunity to aid the Greeks further away in the country. The Greek Diaspora is committed to providing support across Greece, with actions that are effective and truly solve a problem for the community ”.
