by Greek Institute for Research and Education on Road Safety and the Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents ''PANOS MYLONAS"

Organization Description:
The “Panos Mylonas” Greek Road Safety Institute (I.O.A.S.) is a non-profit organization established in 2005, dedicated to promoting road safety and preventing road crashes and fatalities in Greece. It was founded in memory of Panos Mylonas, a 22-year-old university student who lost his life in a road crash in 2004. Our mission is to contribute to safer roads through research, education, training, public awareness and advocacy. We work to promote responsible road-user behavior, strengthen traffic education and support the development and implementation of effective road safety policies. Our activities include educational and awareness-raising programmes for children, young people, adults and professional drivers; road safety training; research and studies; public information campaigns; and initiatives addressing key risk factors such as speeding, drink-driving, distraction and unsafe behavior. We work closely with public authorities, universities, businesses and other organizations in Greece and Europe to promote a comprehensive approach to road safety. Over the years, I.O.A.S. has made a significant contribution to improving road safety awareness in Greece and has reached thousands of citizens through its programmes and campaigns. The Institute is an active member of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and is an advisory body to the United Nations. Its work has received numerous distinctions, including the European Citizen’s Prize awarded by the European Parliament. Our long-term goal is to help create a culture of road safety in Greece and contribute to fewer crashes, injuries and deaths on our roads.

Volunteering Activity Description:

The “European Night Without Accidents” is one of the longest-running nationwide Road Safety awareness and citizen mobilisation initiatives of the Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”.

Implemented since 2007, the initiative aims to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol, with a particular focus on young people, drivers, groups of friends and the wider nightlife community. At the same time, its core message is relevant to all drivers, regardless of age or driving experience. The initiative promotes the designated-driver concept. At the beginning of the evening, groups of friends are encouraged to select one person who voluntarily commits to remaining alcohol-free throughout the night and to driving the group home safely. Volunteers are present at selected nightlife venues, where they engage directly with visitors, provide Road Safety information and communicate the risks associated with drink-driving. The designated driver receives a distinctive wristband as a reminder of the commitment undertaken. At the end of the evening, the designated driver is invited to take a voluntary “friendly” breath
alcohol test. Participants who honour their commitment receive a symbolic reward as positive reinforcement for their responsible choice. If alcohol consumption is detected, volunteers reinforce the campaign’s zero-alcohol message and strongly encourage the participant not to drive, but instead to use public transport, a taxi or another safe alternative for the journey home. Through direct contact with young people at the point at which mobility decisions are actually made, the initiative combines awareness-raising with personal commitment and responsible action. Its core message is clear: Never Drink & Drive The “European Night Without Accidents” promotes responsible choices, encourages peer responsibility within groups of friends and contributes to building a stronger culture of Road Safety
and prevention.
