The Hellenic Initiative announces its partnership with the A. G. Leventis Foundation in awarding a total of $200,000, over a period of 4 years, helping Greek athletes train for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Greece, the birthplace of the ancient and the modern Olympic Games, has a long tradition of successes in many sports. During Rio 2016 Games, Greece ranked 39th in the count of medals.
Recognizing the tremendous efforts of Greek athletes and seeking to maintain the Olympic legacy of our country, the A. G. Leventis Foundation established in 1999 its Olympic Preparations Scholarship Program. The program has supported talented Greek and Cypriot youth in their bid for the Olympic dream, granting over 400 scholarships in the 17 years of its operation. With the contribution of the THI, looking to Tokyo2020, 11 more athletes can participate in the program, every year.
Mr Harry David, Chairman of the A. G. Leventis Foundation’s Olympic Scholarship Committee also commented “Our scholars – young men and women like Anna Korakaki, Leuteris Petrounias, Katerina Stefanidi, Pavlos Kagialis, Panagiotis Mantis – have worked hard, against the odds, to attain their goals. It is empowering to stand alongside such talent and determination, and to do so with a partner like THI, with whom we share the aim of supporting Greece’s future Olympians and of inspiring Greek youth to attain their dreams, no matter how high”
Michael Printzos, Director of Programming, THI, commented: “We are very happy to partner with the A.G. Leventis Foundation. Through this grant, THI is recognizing a new class of Greek heroes, engaging the Greek Diaspora to actively support these gifted athletes, currently challenged by the financial crisis to achieve their full potential.”
This year, THI will be joining the A. G. Leventis Foundation in awarding 36 Olympic Preparation Scholarships, helping our champions train in the most effective way for the upcoming Olympic Games – and through their example also actively promote the love of sport among Greek youth.
