$50,000 Grant from THI Ensures Safe Transportation for ELEPAP’s Brave Children

Children, teachers and officials of ELEPAP (Rehabilitation For The Disabled) were thrilled on October 31 when they saw the shiny school bus made possible by the $50,000 donation by The Hellenic Initiative (THI).
Guided by their teachers, the elementary school students’ singing delighted THI officials, media guests and friends of ELEPAP. The much-needed bus was presented at a ceremony held at ELEPAP’s headquarters and school in Athens.

ELEPAP, founded in 1937, is the oldest non-profit organization in Greece providing rehabilitation services to children, operating facilities in six branches throughout Greece. Its mission is “lifelong support for every child with a disability and their family”, especially children with motor disabilities and neuro-developmental deficits.

Founded in 2012, THI is a global non-profit organization that brings together Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece through programs focused on economic development and crisis relief. Since its founding, THI has raised $ 37 million for Greece and has grown to be the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world.

Dr. Helen N. Skouteli, Pediatric Neurologist and President of ELEPAP, offered greetings. “I would like to extend a huge thank you for the generous donation from THI, a dedicated supporter of ELEPAP’s ongoing mission to enhance the quality of life for infants, children, and adults with disabilities. The bus will transport our brave children to and from ELEPAP on a daily basis, ensuring their secure arrival for essential rehabilitation treatments.”

ELEPAP’s methods help children reach their full potential. “Our purpose is to help our brave children, and adults with disabilities, to take small or large steps forward.” Working with their families, ELEPAP helps children achieve social and school integration. It is indeed remarkable “that 50-60% of our children succeed” as the website notes.
ELEPAP’s 260 staff members, including physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychotherapists, social workers, and special needs educators support 1,100 children daily – more than 110,000 infants, children, and adults since 1937.

Dr. Skouteli declared that “the trust and support of THI is a great honor for us and further acknowledges the vital work that ELEPAP has been consistently carrying out for over 87 years.”

THI Board Member Jeremy Downward, mirrored that appreciation: “Thank you very much for our ongoing relationship with this wonderful organization. It’s an absolute delight to be here today. Seeing these wonderful children and listening to their happy songs is heartwarming and inspiring. We plan to continue to support this extraordinary organization that has an august historical past and its noble mission.”

George P. Stamas, THI’s Board President, stated, “Individuals with disabilities often face physical and mental conditions that exacerbate the challenges they face. Ensuring safe and comfortable transportation for ELEPAP’s children helps significantly.”

Andrew N. Liveris, THI’s Board Chairman, stated: “ELEPAP’s Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Unit for Brain Injuries, in collaboration with the related Brain Injury Day Treatment Program, is fantastic – but practical additions like a safe and comfortable school bus also make a big difference, and THI is proud to help.”
