$25,000 Grant to Expand Nosilia’s Palliative Care for Seniors
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) has awarded a $25,000 grant to Nosilia, a nonprofit that has pioneered palliative care for people of limited mobility and financial means in Greece, especially the elderly. The grant funds Nosilia’s new ‘Γήρας τιμάν- Honor the Elderly’ program which focuses on providing care to those over 65. With the elderly population in Greece growing and healthcare resources stretched thin, Nosilia’s work has become increasingly critical. With this support from THI, Nosilia aims to reach and assist 100 patients in the coming year.
Founded in Athens in 2001, Nosilia provides free in-home medical care and health services to vulnerable and isolated individuals battling chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The partnership with The Hellenic Initiative (THI) began when Nosilia was recognized as a winner in the 2021 Venture Impact Awards. General Manager Olga Papadoiliopoulou stated that this new grant will allow Nosilia to expand its services, addressing the growing needs of Greece’s aging population.
A joint feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Health and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation revealed that 130,000 people in Greece need palliative care, yet only 2% receive it. The public healthcare system does not offer these services, and many elderly Greeks, surviving on a modest pension of 380 euros per month, are unable to afford private care.
Originally a volunteer-driven organization, Nosilia has since grown into a team of nine professionals, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, a social worker, and five psychologists. The team provides essential medical care and psychological support, visiting patients two to three times per week. In addition to addressing medical needs, the organization also offers family caregiver training, helping to alleviate emotional burdens such as depression that often accompany chronic illness.
